After suddenly discontinuing the NES Classic Edition last year, Nintendo is resurrecting the classic Nintendo console this summer.

When the NES Classic Edition was revealed, it sparked massive excitement online and it eventually sold out instantly when it launched in November 2016. The system was in high demand with shortages so it was really difficult to get your hands on one if you didn’t get one early. At online at sites like eBay and Amazon, the price for the NES Classic quickly skyrocketed. Eventually, Nintendo halted production and discontinued the NES Classic due to limited resources in April of last year. As of April 2017, Nintendo sold over 2 million consoles worldwide.

Now Nintendo officially announced that it is relaunching the NES Classic Edition with a new release date of June 29, 2018. The NES Classic mini is a miniaturized version of the original Nintendo Entertainment System that launched over 30 years ago. But now it will come bundled with 30 built-in games. Nintendo said in a statement: “We will resume production for NES Classic Edition this year. We plan to continue selling NES Classic Edition and Super NES Classic Edition this year. We view them as an opportunity to garner interest in Nintendo Switch from those who have not interacted with video games in a long time, or ever.”

According to Nintendo’s tweet, the retro 8-bit console as well as the 16-bit SNES Classic Edition will be available at least through the end of 2018. Therefore, if Nintendo can manage to keep sufficient stock, these could be must-have Christmas gifts or stocking stuffers.

Since gamers are into nostalgia and there is high demand for these classic games, it represents a huge opportunity for Nintendo. Right now, gamers can’t get these games on the Switch. But Nintendo recently announced plans with its Nintendo Switch Online service to begin offering at least 20 classic NES games ranging from Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong to Pac-Man, The Legend of Zelda, and more. What’s cool is they will be enhanced with an online multiplayer component.
