Mattel introduces new Gabby Douglas ‘Shero’ Barbie doll.
Mattel announced that a new Barbie is on store shelves across the nation. The newest Barbie is inspired by Gabby Douglas, the Olympic gymnast champion and Team USA gold medalist. The new doll is fittingly named Gabby Douglas ‘Shero’ Barbie doll.
Performing a search for the definition of ‘shero’ reveals that a shero is a woman regarded as a hero. It is quite remarkable to be so highly regarded, but Ms. Douglas is definitely well-deserving of that prestigious title since she has inspired so many young boys and girls to aspire to achieve their dreams and passions. Relentlessly aspiring to achieve the impossible, the 21-year-old Olympian serves as a wonderful role model to today’s young kids and youth.
The announcement of this Barbie doll’s development was first announced sometime prior to the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games. So now Gabby Douglas joins Ava DuVernay, Emmy Rossum, and Misty Copeland in the elusive Barbie ‘Shero’ product family.
Gabby Douglas was lucky and fortunate enough to collaborate with Mattel’s designers on the creation of the new Barbie doll based on her likeness. She had the dream opportunity to work closely with the team, providing input on the doll’s body, clothes, and hair. She had a blast working on the doll and stated in an interview that the doll looks just like her.
Douglas mentioned that it means a lot to the African-American community when a doll looks like you. She said that it promotes a positive message that regardless of your skin color, hair style, or other distinguishing traits or characteristics, you can still achieve your goals. Mattel is also promoting a sense of diversity and inclusivity – which has been rapidly gaining relevance in the world of toys.
Gabby Douglas stated to the Huffington Post that she was honored and humbled to be included in the Barbie ‘Shero’ collection. With this Barbie collaboration, Douglas hopes to inspire young boys and girls to achieve their dreams and passions. Douglas serves as inspiration demonstrating first-hand to everyone that you can be anything you want to be with 100 percent commitment and dedication.
