A New Skylanders Game?

We know a new Skylanders game is coming, but what should we expect?

Earlier during the company’s quarterly earnings call, Activision confirmed a new Skylanders game is coming in 2014. Given that Activision has revealed each of the last games at the New York Toy Fair, we should expect them to reveal more about the next game at the upcoming event in February. On the Toy Fair 2014 map, we can see that Activision has already booked space for its booth. The company is planning to show something at the event. What will they show off?

The genre that Activision created with toys interacting inside of a video game has become a lot more competitive. Last year, Activision introduced us to swappable characters with Skylanders: Swap Force.  However, Disney Infinity actually outsold Skylanders:  Swap Force.

Disney Infinity was the10th best selling game of 2013. The Skylander’s franchise is still doing well as it is still the number 1 selling franchise for kids. While the Skylanders franchise as a whole did well, no game in the series broke the top 10 games list. With the new game, there is no doubt that Activision will be looking to reclaim the top spot in the category.

There is a lot of speculation about the new game. Will it be a full-fledged game in the series or just a side game?  What’s it going to be called? With the popularity of tablets, will some form of the game appear on tablets? One idea thrown around is that we may see an entirely new type of game built around karts similar to Angry Birds Go! A new kart game might work but it would up against a new Mario Kart on the Wii U. Another possibility is that we might see articulated Skylanders, something that fans have been asking for years.

Skylanders: Swap Force was developed by Vicarious Visions. We expect the new version of the game to come from Toys For Bob. Along with the new game, we expect to see a new cast of characters joining the existing family of Skylanders.

Stay tuned for more information with the New York Toy Fair 2014 just around the corner.
