Merge unveiled its upcoming Merge 6DoF Blaster, a handheld VR blaster without a headset that immerses you in the game at New York Toy Fair 2018.
Merge unveiled an exciting and promising new product known as the Merge 6DoF Blaster at the New York Toy Fair 2018. It first made its debut at CES 2018 show in Las Vegas. When paired with your smartphone, it essentially transforms into a handheld VR blaster without a headset and immerses you in the game. What’s cool? The next generation blaster offers six degrees of freedom (6DoF) positional tracking technology, meaning it tracks both your movement and orientation. So when you move, it moves; when you duck, it ducks, and when you jump, it jumps. And it’s versatile so you can play anywhere from your bedroom to the backyard.

Check out the Merge 6DoF Blaster in action at the New York Toy Fair 2018!
The Merge 6DoF Blaster is very different from other blasters. Other blasters let you play by simply turning. In contrast, six degrees of freedom allows you to move right, left, duck, and really walk around in the real world to guide what you’re doing in the virtual world. So it is essentially virtual reality without a headset and it renders those other blasters obsolete.
The blaster itself features four action buttons. In our hands-on demo at New York Toy Fair 2018, they were used for shooting, zooming, reloading, and interacting. The demo had a striking resemblance to Superhot, where you have to duck, twist, and move while blasting enemies in a virtual world. What really impressed us most is that the device was super responsive in mimicking your real world actions and translating it on screen in the virtual world.
When it launches on store shelves later this year, it will offer multiplayer support for up to two players. The SDK will be open to developers so more apps can be added to its library. In other words, an unlimited number of apps will be compatible with this device. The device will be compatible with both iPhone and Android phones. A smartphone will be required to enjoy the full experience. What’s cool? There is no expensive hardware to purchase, no heavy headset to wear, and there’s no setup required. Just dock your phone and you’re ready to begin playing.
Designed for ages 10 and older, the Merge 6DoF Blaster launches this summer and will retail for $39.99. Hands-down, this was one of the coolest things we saw at Toy Fair and the future looks promising. We can’t wait to try the final product when it launches later this summer. Get ready to step into the game!
