Lego Marvel Avengers makes the NPD’s top 10 best selling list in January 2016.

According to the NPD Group, Lego Marvel Avengers is one of the top 10 best selling games in January 2016. We called it one of the best PS4 kid games and one of the best Xbox One kid games.

January 2016 was a slow month for new game releases, which led to the industry contracting 4% compared to the same period last year. Both hardware and software sales shrank. With a 81 percent drop off, the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii are not selling the way they used too. The Nintendo 3DS dropped off 21%. Even newer consoles made less revenue this month, but this is because of the price cuts. Unit sales remain constant.

Accessories, including toys to life action figures for the Disney’s Infinity and Nintendo’s Amiibo, were the only bright spot of the month. They grew 15%. Nintendo said that Amiibo figures continue to sell well with more than half a million figures sold in January. That puts the Ambiibo figure over 12 million since they launched.

Here were the top 10 best selling games in January 2016.

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops III (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
  2. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
  3. NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
  4. Star Wars: Battlefront (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
  5. Fallout 4 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  6. Minecraft (360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3)
  7. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
  8. Madden NFL 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
  9. Lego Marvel Avengers (PS4, Xbox One, 360, Wii U, PS3, 3DS, Vita)
  10. FIFA 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)

The only new release that broke the list was Lego Marvel Avengers. It came out at the tail end of the month so it is even more amazing that it charted. When Lego: The Force Awakens releases, it is going to be huge.

Typically Lego games sell the best on older consoles. Xbox and Wii usually have the family games market cornered. However, the game sold the most on the PS4, which might mean more families own a PS4 than Xbox One and have transitioned to the current generation. There was some exclusive DLC on the PS4, which might also explain why more people bought the PS4 version. Besides the new Lego game, every other game has appeared on the list previously.

Minecraft, our favorite game for kids, continues to be unstoppable, charting and selling forever. NBA 2k16, Star Wars: Battlefront, Madden NFL 16, FIFA 16 are other kids games that broke the top 10.

The best selling console and software sales leader was the PS4, according to Sony.

It appears that most customers have made the transition from the last generation of hardware to the newer consoles.
