Etch A Sketch

After owning Etch A Sketch for over 5 decades, Ohio Art Company sells the classic toy to Spin Master.

Etch a Sketch has been one of the most popular toys for kids in 2021. News has just been released that Ohio Art Company, the creator and owner of Etch A Sketch, has sold the classic toy to Spin Master Corp., a Toronto-based toy company. The company sold Etch A Sketch and Doodle Sketch for an undisclosed price.

After owning these classic toys over decades, it comes as a bit of a surprise to those inside the industry. However, Ohio Art’s president, Martin Killgallon, was done considering the business over the long-term. The company plans to focus on metal lithography, which is a craft on which it was founded over a century ago.

Interestingly, Etch A Sketch was created by a French inventor. Since 1960, the brand was produced or owned by Ohio Art. The company purchased the rights to Etch A Sketch for a mere $25,000 in 1960.

The change in ownership begs the question of whether Spin Master will simply produce the classic Etch A Sketch with no major revisions or will it attempt to introduce some new tech innovations to this iconic toy. This certainly will be an interesting development to follow.
