Former members of the Disney Infinity team create new studio focused on AR.
The sun may have set on the popular toys-to-life series, Disney Infinity; however, some of those developers have transitioned to the world of augmented reality. CastAR is the new game development studio led by former members of the Disney Infinity team. This studio will focus on creating mixed reality experiences for players. No specific games have been announced from the studio.
The original company, Avalanche, was formed in 1995 and acquired by Disney nearly a decade after. The studio ultimately was shut down in May 2016. Disney Infinity meshed the world of toys with a family friendly videogame set in fictional Disney worlds. Disney Infinity introduced characters from the Marvel and Star Wars universes. Since former Avalanche employees had experience bridging the physical and virtual worlds, they were deemed to be a good fit for the CastAR’s AR platform.
CastAR’s augmented reality platform utilizes special glasses and is slated for launch in 2017. Could this represent the rise of AR games and the next logical phase for those who loved the toys-to-life games? It will certainly be interesting to see how this plays out.
